Most Interesting Places to See in Philadelphia

Planning a trip to Philadelphia may seem overwhelming. The city has so much history, culture and great local food, it’s hard to know where to start. If you only have a few days to take it all in, you may not be able to see and do everything. However, with a few tips, you can be sure your trip will include all the best stops.

The Liberty Bell

The Liberty Bell is not just a central icon of American democracy but happens to be centrally located, as well.

The Liberty Bell attracts long lines of visitors and, in its current home, it is no longer visible from any outdoor vantage point. Plan ahead by getting tickets for a guided walking tour that includes the Liberty Bell. Preferably, see the Liberty Bell in the morning, leaving the rest of your day open to explore the surrounding neighborhood. Tours are lead by experienced and knowledgeable guides in period costumes, which can make the educational portion of your visit fun for the whole family.

Market Street

After seeing the Liberty Bell, walk six blocks west on Market Street and turn right on 12th.

Redding Terminal Market will be one block north on your right. A Philadelphia favorite, the market is an indoor collection of food counters and stalls serving cuisine from around the globe. Try the local favorites too, such as Philadelphia cheesesteaks and Amish apple turnovers. Next, walk back down past Market Street, turning right on Chestnut or Walnut. By the time you get to 17th Street, you will be in the center of Philadelphia’s high-ticket shopping district.

Pat’s King of Steaks

A special trip to the heart of South Philly is worth the effort.

Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks sit facing each other from opposite sides of the same intersection. Each has its loyal fans. Either, however, is capable of making you the best cheesesteak sandwich you have ever had. Beware of the rules for proper ordering!

Please Touch Museum

Finally, be sure to visit the Please Touch Museum. If Lewis Carroll and Willy Wonka joined their imaginations to design a museum, this would be the result. An indoor carousel and a life-size replica of Alice’s tea party are among the wonders to be seen here.

As with any large city, there is always more to see in Philadelphia. You may not get to everything in the guidebook, but you can experience the best of what the city has to offer. Use these tips as you plan your trip to Philadelphia and you are sure to leave happy and well fed.
