When it comes to budget-friendly destinations, Malaysia is a top choice. One of the biggest attractions in travelling to Malaysia is the vast selection of beaches available. You can stay on the beach for very little money. The options are endless, but as always, some hotels stand out more than others.
1. Japamala Resort, Tioman Island, Pahang
Japamala Resort is a three hour ferry ride from Mersing, making it feel remote and wild. You won’t find a towering metal and glass building here, the hotel strives to cast a very small shadow on the island’s beauty. Guests stay in simple huts set along a rainforest covered cliff, accessible only by boat. If you are looking for a unique experience that really gets you close to nature, this is the hotel to book.
2. Bubu Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu
Bubu is located near the Thai border, giving you easy access to another stamp in your passport. The long white sand beach is the stuff of daydreams and there is plenty of opportunity to work on your tan. The hotel features simple chalets. If you are looking for the lowest cost accommodation possible, the hotel offers rooms without air conditioning and with a shared bathroom for budget rates. You can always upgrade if you need to.
3. Angullia Beach House Resort, Marang, Terengganu
Choose between dirt cheap dorms or splurge a little for a cute chalet on the beach at Agullia Beach House Resort. The resort features a beach cafe where you can grab a light meal throughout the day and a livelier restaurant at night. You can also book scuba diving or snorkelling trips from the lobby and enjoy some of the incredible underwater sights in the area. Local fishermen will take you out to catch exotic fish for a fee, as well.
4. Tenggol Coral Beach Resort, Tenggol Island, Terengganu
Tenggol Island is a hidden paradise. This is a lesser known destination for tourists, so you’ll be able to enjoy crowd-free beaches. The resort offers 20 comfortably air-conditions chalets on the beach. Some include four beds so a small group or family can easily stay in one cabin. There are plenty of sights to see, but you can also just relax and swing in a hammock beside the water.
5. Holiday Villa, Cherating, Pahang
While there are some truly budget rooms at the Holiday Villa, you may want to consider splurging on a luxury suite with its own private plunge pool. No matter which room option you choose, the service at the hotel is amazing and brings return visitors year after year. It helps that the ocean is a mere 100 yards from the hotel and the grounds are replete with tropical flowers.
6. Maznah Guest House, Cherating, Pahang
The Maznah Guest House offers both dorms and beach huts. Either way, you’ll be sharing a bathroom, but each room or hut has a fan to help cool things down. The price is nice and low, making this east coast backpacker hotel the perfect place to hang out for a while and get in some beach time. If you want to pay a little more, you can upgrade to a modern style bungalow, complete with private bathroom and air conditioning.
7. Colourful Motel, Pantai Cenang, Langkawi
This tiny backpacker hostel consists of just four rooms named after luxury cars like Porsche and Ferrari. While the rooms are fairly simple, they are clean and right on the beach. Each room has its own bathroom, as well as A/C. Every night, you just have to step outside to encounter live music, barbeques and plenty of party action on the beach.
8. Scarborough, Langkawi
Scarborough is actually a fish and chips restaurant known for its delicious food, but it rents two caravans. Each caravan sleeps four and while the prices are a little higher than most hotels on this list, you can fit a small family into one easily. The caravans are steps from the beach and contain all the necessary conveniences to make your stay a pleasant one.
9. Lone Pine Hotel, Batu Ferringhi, Penang
The Lone Pine Resort has a vintage feel to it, though it was recently renovated. Originally built in 1948, the resort was the first hotel in Penang. Nearly all the spacious rooms are equipped with balconies overlooking the sea. If you prefer fresh water to salt, you’ll enjoy the designer pool available to guests. You can relax out of the sun poolside in one of the many Arabian tents.
10. Chymes, Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Another vintage style hotel, Chymes offers bungalows along the beach. Each bungalow is decorated with 60’s style furniture to give it a retro feel. You can also opt to stay in the on-site bed and breakfast, choosing between a traditional spicy Malaysian breakfast or a more traditional Western one.
You don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy a beachside vacation. When you choose Malaysia as your destination, you can spend less and get more. Do you know any other inexpensive beach hotel in Malaysia to add to the list?
